A Sheffield House Inside a Global Brand
Mercure Sheffield Kenwood Hall occupies a house built in the 1840s for George Wostenholm, a Sheffield cutlery manufacturer. The original stone building anchors the site, and a flag-lined drive leads to the porte-cochère at the entrance.
The property has changed hands several times. Marsela Loulai, the hotel manager, described that pattern in an interview published by eHotelier on 13 October 2026. “Through the years, the hotel has changed owners, with different brands,” she said. “But the hotel has always tried to maintain its history.”
Kenwood Hall holds 114 bedrooms and nine conference and meeting spaces, and it sits in the Vine Hotels portfolio under the Mercure brand. Vine Hotels operates seven hotels. The Caterer records the Sheffield property’s rebrand to the Mercure badge and a two-year investment program behind it.
Local Identity in the Rooms and the Grounds
The interview gives the meeting rooms themes taken from the city. One room honors Sheffield FC, a club with origins in 1857. A second room takes its theme from The Crucible Theatre, which has hosted the World Snooker Championship since 1977. A third is built around Henderson’s Relish, the Sheffield condiment that locals call Hendo’s.
A spa and a gym operate on site, and the leisure membership brings Sheffield residents onto the grounds. The property hosts weddings and family occasions for local people. Kenwood Hall also sells packages that send guests into the surrounding area, with the Peak District within reach of the property.
The Manager’s Route Through the Ranks
The interview places Loulai’s move into the hotel manager role in November 2025. She had joined Kenwood Hall as operations manager after five years of events work.
“I listen to my staff, I listen to the guests, I make sure I know what I need to deliver,” she said. “It’s very important we look after our guests – because that’s what hospitality is – but we have to look after our staff as well.”
The Recruitment Constraint
Kenwood Hall employs a mix of Sheffield residents and international professionals. Recruitment for casual roles during busy periods has become harder, and Loulai said the cycle of recruiting and training new staff is difficult to sustain. The property holds a stable core team.
She wants the industry to work with colleges earlier. “They need to get away from the mindset that it’s just a temporary job,” she said. “Hospitality offers career progression, and it can be a very satisfying, well-paid job. You just have to work to get there.”
What the Record Carries
Kenwood Hall operates 114 bedrooms, nine meeting spaces, a spa and a gym under the Mercure brand, inside the Vine Hotels portfolio. The house dates to the 1840s. The interview carries the ownership record, the room themes and the recruitment position.
