Peru’s Ministry of Culture grouped Machu Picchu into three circuits and ten routes in June 2024. One ticket covers one route in one direction. A second circuit needs a second ticket on a different day or time slot.
The ticket rule fixes what a guest can see in a visit, and it fixes what a hotel can sell. Adam Mogelonsky and Larry Mogelonsky, principals of Hotel Mogel Consulting in Toronto, take up the arrangement in a feature published on 7 October 2026. Adam Mogelonsky stayed at Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel in Machu Picchu Town.
The day trip and its clock
The feature describes the standard itinerary. A visitor wakes before dawn in Cusco at 3,400 metres, boards a bus and then a train through the Sacred Valley, and takes a 30-minute bus up the switchbacks. Trains, buses and hiking make a 14-hour round trip. The timed gate admits one circuit.
Most first-time visitors take Circuit 2B, the classic route through the upper and lower terraces and the view below the Guardian’s House. Circuit 3A covers the lower royal route and the four-hour climb up Huayna Picchu. The feature recommends 2B in the early morning.
Two circuits take two tickets on two days. A day trip holds one circuit.
The property
Sumaq Machu Picchu Hotel is a five-star property of 62 rooms in Machu Picchu Town, formerly Aguas Calientes. It stands on the bank of the Urubamba River, eight minutes from the train station and on the road to the citadel. The Clavijo Begazo family opened the hotel in 2007 under Clabe Andina. Angie Clavijo, co-owner and managing director, runs it with her brother Aníbal. Their father, Don Aníbal Clavijo, has spent more than 35 years in Peruvian boutique hospitality.
Cusco sits at 3,400 metres and Machu Picchu Town at about 2,000. Adam Mogelonsky reports that the town’s lower elevation was gentler on his body than Cusco.
Kitchen, spa and credentials
Qunuq Restaurant buys native potatoes from the community of Huatata, where more than 350 varieties grow, along with Andean quinoa, native cacao and medicinal herbs bought from highland farmers. Two tasting menus carry the programme: Flavors of the Andes: Apucc Mikhuna and Munay-Ki. Aqlla Spa draws on Andean hot stones, local honey and native plants including muña and coca leaf.
Sumaq belongs to the Considerate Collection of Small Luxury Hotels of the World and appears in the MICHELIN Guide hotel selection. B Corp certification with B Lab is in its final steps.
What the property sells
A guest who sleeps in town takes the first circuit in the morning and returns the following afternoon for the second. Rooms, the restaurant, the two tasting menus and the spa sit inside that schedule.
The asset is a 62-room property on the road to the citadel, held by a family company in its second generation since 2007. The Mogelonsky feature argues that the overnight stay gives a guest the second circuit and the hours around it.
