The venue is the fixed part of the weekend. The teams and the calendar date are the moving parts. A hotel budget that carries this weekend as a fixed annual line holds a Saturday it cannot name in advance.
What the Record Fixes
The encyclopedia record of the game dates it from 2011 with Lucas Oil Stadium as the site throughout, and carries a host term through 2028. The record puts the game on the first Saturday of December as the usual slot, with the 2020 edition moved to the third Saturday of that month.
The conference's release keeps the venue and raises the count. It calls the 2026 edition the 16th annual title matchup and pairs the top two teams in the Big Ten standings at the conclusion of the regular season.
Both publishers agree on the Saturday. The destination bureau's page carries 2025 dating and publishes the 2025 game as Saturday, December 6.
Two Festival Days, One Night of Rooms
The venue's event page dates the Fan Fest December 5-6, 2026 at a 70,000 forecast. The conference's release dates the same festival Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5 and puts more than 200,000 square feet behind it.
The 70,000 figure equals 9.86 attendees for each of downtown's 7,100 hotel rooms. Measured against the 4,700 skywalk-connected rooms, it reads 14.89.
The demand lands on one Saturday night. The venue's December feed carries no booking on December 6 and nothing further until the Performance Racing Industry Show on December 10. The stadium feed carries no event on December 6.
The Market the Weekend Sits In
The Downtown Indy Alliance snapshot published by Bradford Allen gives downtown occupancy at 64.7 percent against a stated U.S. 62.4 percent, ADR at $209.11 and RevPAR at $135.20. CoStar counts 8.1 million room nights in the 12 months to mid-2025, more than 580,000 above the market's pre-COVID peak.
Newmark's 4Q 2025 Indianapolis report, on Kalibri Labs data, gives the city a year-to-date RevPAR change of minus 4.8 percent against minus 0.7 percent for the Midwest. The city's RevPAR index is 0.914, second of 16 Midwest markets.
Supply arrives against both reads. Bradford Allen counts more than 1,500 rooms under construction, 3,402 in final planning and 3,220 proposed. The venue's expansion page carries Signia by Hilton Indianapolis at 803 rooms with a December 2026 target, a count equal to 11.3 percent of the current downtown inventory.
CBRE Hotels Research reports convention-hotel banquet revenue down 7.3 percent in 2025 against resort banquet revenue up 8.7 percent in the same period. Its sample covers 2,669 U.S. full-service, resort and convention hotels from the 2023 and 2024 Trends surveys, with monthly statements for 866 of them across January to June 2025.
The Rest of the Conference's Own Calendar
The conference frames the weekend as the close of a longer run. Its release dates the inaugural Big Ten Volleyball Tournament to Nov. 20-25, 2026 at Fishers Event Center and calls the title game the cap on nearly two weeks of Big Ten activity in and around Indianapolis.
What Would Falsify the Position
Three published items would move it. A conference statement naming an alternate host city inside the current host term would break the venue claim. A published attendance count well under 70,000 for the 2026 festival would leave the compression thinner than the venue's own forecast. A Signia opening before December 2026 adds 803 rooms to the downtown base, which raises that base 11.3 percent.
The Close
The venue record runs from 2011 to 2028. The conference fixes the game to the Saturday at the close of the regular season, so a hotel can date the weekend's Saturday from the schedule. The teams and the calendar date arrive with the final standings. The position stands: this weekend is a dated compression event, and the base demand around it rests on the convention calendar.
