The Position
The AFCA's move to February 14-16, 2027 puts three nights of published block inventory into downtown Indianapolis in the month the rate record lists as the cheapest. The shift widens the citywide's shoulder.
The American Football Coaches Association published the change on December 5, 2025. The release gives the reason in the association's own words: "the need to shift future dates due to the changing landscape of college football." It adds that the decision "comes directly from member feedback." The 2026 edition stays in Charlotte.
The Nights the Block Is Sized For
The AFCA's official housing agent lists 23 Indianapolis properties. Per-night availability in the booking payload reads 376 rooms on Friday February 12, 1,629 on Saturday February 13, 1,823 on Sunday February 14, 1,733 on Monday February 15 and 433 on Tuesday February 16, read on September 24, 2026. The five nights total 5,994 rooms. A Saturday arrival with a Tuesday departure holds 5,185 of them across February 13, 14 and 15.
The block's own clocks start before the sessions. Exhibitors may prepare space in Halls B-E from 8 a.m. on Friday February 12, and exhibits must be ready for the exhibit-area opening at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday February 14. The floor closes at noon on Tuesday February 16.
The Month's Rate Line
Engine's Indianapolis table prices the city at $128 a night across 1.2 million public rate observations from May 2024 to April 2026. February reads $107, which is 16 percent below the city average and the lowest month in the table. May reads $158, 23 percent above the average. Engine defines the figures as par rates, the cheapest publicly available price at the time of each search.
A convention that lands inside the lowest month of that curve adds nights to a city that sells them cheaply in February.
The Week It Occupies
The venue's own feed returns 14 records between January 20 and February 28, 2027, and eight of them fall in February. The eight carry venue forecasts that total 28,650, and the AFCA's 7,000 is 24.4 percent of that sum. The convention is the only record between February 13 and February 21. The Economic Club of Indiana luncheon occupies February 12, and the WWETT Show opens February 22.
Four other February shows fill the week of February 7 to 12. Three of them run on February 10, and their forecasts total 4,350, which is 61.3 percent of the venue's 7,100-room downtown count.
Who Fills the Rooms
The AFCA publishes one gate on attendance: a delegate must hold an active membership, and membership includes convention registration. Annual dues run from $400 for FBS head coaches to $25 for a high-school affiliate membership. The association counts more than 11,000 members, and the venue forecasts 7,000 attendees for 2027.
The Booking Window
The block runs from $139 to $264 a night across 22 priced properties. JW Marriott Indianapolis carries a placeholder in place of a rate. Cut-off dates fall on January 14 for eight properties, January 21 for one and January 22 for 14. Six properties collect a deposit of one night's room and tax around January 15, Signia by Hilton Indianapolis collects a nonrefundable deposit around January 22, and three properties require a two-night minimum.
The deposits put cash on the books in January for a stay in the cheapest month of the rate record.
Where the Case Is Thin
The Tuesday close leaves Wednesday February 17 with no demand behind it. Exhibitor move-in on February 12 and 13 puts crews on property across the two days before the Sunday opening. A group that books at the low end of the band fills rooms in a month the rate table already prices 16 percent below the city average.
The Position Holds
Published block inventory across three nights, a Saturday arrival inside February, and a solo position in the third week of the month carry the read. The shift widens the shoulder, and the gain lands in the month the rate record marks as the low.
